The magic of the historic streets of Kyoto is so poignant that US Secretary of War Henry Stimson persuaded President Truman to spare Kyoto from bombing during WWII because it was of such cultural importance. Today, the aura of tradition remains on the streets of Kyoto and it is not unusual to see women in full Geisha dress to be wandering the streets amid coffee shops and shopping destinations.
